Background of the study
Political discourse in multilingual societies often requires effective interpretation to ensure that complex ideas and policy proposals are accurately communicated. In Enugu, where Igbo is a dominant language, interpreters play a vital role in conveying political messages during debates, speeches, and public forums. Interpreting strategies, such as consecutive interpretation, summarization, and contextual adaptation, are employed to enhance clarity and comprehension (Okafor, 2023). These strategies aim to balance linguistic precision with cultural relevance, ensuring that the political discourse remains accessible to all stakeholders. However, the dynamic nature of political dialogue, rapid exchanges, and the use of specialized political terminology present challenges for interpreters, potentially leading to ambiguities or misinterpretations (Nwankwo, 2024). This study examines the effectiveness of various interpreting strategies in enhancing the clarity of Igbo language political discourse by analyzing recorded sessions, conducting interpreter interviews, and surveying audience understanding. The goal is to identify best practices that can improve the overall quality of political communication in Enugu.

Statement of the problem
Despite the use of specialized interpreting strategies, the clarity of Igbo language political discourse in Enugu is often compromised. Challenges such as rapid speech, complex political terminology, and contextual ambiguities can lead to misinterpretations, thereby affecting public understanding and political engagement (Okafor, 2023). Inconsistencies in the application of interpretation strategies further exacerbate these issues (Nwankwo, 2024). This study aims to identify the specific factors that hinder clear communication in political settings and to propose improvements that enhance the effectiveness of interpreting practices in Igbo political discourse.

Objectives of the study:

  1. To assess the current interpreting strategies used in Igbo political discourse.
  2. To identify challenges affecting the clarity of interpretations.
  3. To recommend strategies for improving interpreter performance.

Research questions:

  1. What interpreting strategies are most commonly used in Igbo political discourse?
  2. What challenges impede clear communication?
  3. How can interpreting practices be improved for enhanced clarity?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it evaluates the impact of interpreting strategies on the clarity of Igbo political discourse, offering actionable insights for interpreters and political stakeholders. Improved interpreting practices will foster better public engagement and political transparency in Enugu (Okafor, 2023; Nwankwo, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to interpreter-mediated political discourse in Igbo within Enugu and does not extend to other languages or informal contexts.

Definitions of terms:

  • Interpreting strategies: Techniques used by interpreters to convey spoken language.
  • Political discourse: Communication related to political processes and ideas.
  • Clarity: The quality of being easily understood.
